Purpose:

Third Avenue School provides students with special education services and social-emotional learning opportunities to help students become successful community members.

Who We Serve:

The Third Avenue School serves students who have been identified with a disability and are eligible to receive special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Further eligibility criteria are determined by the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team. Students whose IEP team has determined that the students require a highly structured environment, receive individualized instruction in social-emotional learning, and opportunities to generalize their skills in a wide variety of settings.

The goal at Third Avenue School is to create a learning environment in which students can gain the skills required to be successful in their home school buildings. Once a student has met the identified behavior criteria, the child will begin the process of transitioning back to their home building. This transition will be highly monitored and individualized to ensure student success.

Third Avenue provides students with a wide variety of experiences and opportunities to practice and generalize the skills they have learned. Staff provides students with instruction in social-emotional learning, core academic instruction, and opportunities to participate in electives and unique experiences.

Third Avenue School provides students with:

• Building Wide Positive Behavior Supports
• Core Instruction aligned with resources the student’s home building is utilizing, in order to ensure a smooth transition back to their home building when the child is ready
• Individualized opportunities for personal growth
• Collaborative teams that work with home buildings to prepare students for a smooth transition back to their building when ready

Students eligible to attend Third Avenue School will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities. These activities may include:

• Community navigation activities
• KCKCC Pioneer Career Center
• Grocery shopping
• Community scavenger hunts
• On the job training at a worksite
• Community Service Learning
• Obtaining a state ID or driver's license
• Connecting with outside agencies
• Exploring job options
• Participating in local recreational activities such as bowling, fishing, hiking, etc.
• Person-centered planning
