Food is a big part of everyone’s well-being, and Leavenworth students need a place to eat where they can connect with others, recharge, and enjoy a sense of happiness in their school. That’s why we serve food kids love to eat and create programs that encourage fun and discovery.

Our foodservice team is passionate about using fresh, nutritious, minimally processed and locally sourced ingredients, and we foster a sense of adventure in students through experiential learning activities – all with healthier students, healthier communities and a healthier planet in mind.

Our goal every day is to make sure that Leavenworth students leave the cafeteria happier and healthier than when they came in!

Child Nutrition Information

Leavenworth USD 453 to offer FREE breakfast and lunch meals to students for the 25-26 school year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service has been working to expand access to the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which allows school districts the option to offer all students healthy school meals at no cost. Specifically, one free breakfast and one free lunch will be available to all Pre-K to 12^th grade students enrolled with USD 453. Additional meals and extra milk will be available for traditional purchases. Leavenworth USD 453 applied to participate in the CEP program district-wide in advance of the 23-24 school year.

This program will save Leavenworth USD 453 families approximately $850 per student throughout the course of the school year, for those that eat both breakfast and lunch on school days. The RevTrak system will remain active for families to make deposits for students to make purchases such as second entrees or servings of additional fruit, vegetables or milk; upper grade levels will have access to additional ala carte purchases.

A district can participate in the program for four consecutive years and can stop participating/opt-out at any time. Families will be requested to complete a Household Economic Survey during the enrollment process to assist with documentation of district eligibility reporting.

Continuation of this program will be dependent on a high percentage of student participation. Families will remain responsible for outstanding balances from previous years, or from purchases beyond the free breakfast/lunch service.

At USD 453 Child Nutrition takes pride in providing students with nutritious meals that give them the fuel to succeed in the classroom every day. All meals meet the criteria and regulations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Kansas State Department of Education.

Backpack Buddies Information

Backpack Buddies is a non-profit volunteer program that provides qualifying pre-k through 3rd-grade students who sign up with a backpack of shelf-stable food for the weekend. This resource is only available to students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third grades.

The Leavenworth Schools are partnered with the Leavenworth Backpack Buddies and Harvesters to bring this resource to Leavenworth students. Each Friday, students are given a backpack filled with single-serving, non-perishable, easily consumed, and vitamin-fortified food items. There are NO COSTS to the school, child, or the child's family.

Students that qualify for free or reduced lunch are eligible for the Backpack Buddies program.

Leavenworth schools have been partnered with Backpack Buddies for 17 years and in that time have distributed over 2,000,000 food items to students. 💙
