Leavenworth Board of Education - Meeting Summary

October 12, 2020

On Monday, October 12, 2020, the Leavenworth Board of Education voted 7-0 to approve the transition of all 5th thru 12th grade students enrolled in the In-Person learning model to begin a five-day per week academic schedule no later than Monday, October 26.  Pre-K through 4th grade students began a 5-day per week academic schedule for In-Person learning on Monday, October 5.

District leadership and building principals worked to develop a phase-in plan in collaboration with teacher representatives from their school buildings.

Group A (last names beginning with A-K) will continue to attend school on Mondays and Thursdays; and Group B (last names beginning L-Z) will continue to attend on Tuesdays and Fridays, until their grade level is phased-in as follows (please contact your school directly if you are unclear on what days your student is approved to attend):

- 5th, 7th, 9th, and 12th grade students will start a 5-day per week attendance schedule beginning on Thursday, October 15.

-
6th and 8th grade students will start a 5-day per week attendance schedule beginning on Tuesday, October 20.

- 10th and 11th grade students will start a 5-day per week attendance schedule beginning on Monday, October 26.

The decision was made after a presentation to the Board of Education by Dr. Roth, Superintendent of Schools, and Ms. Christy Jones, Leavenworth High School building principal.  They provided an overview of academic challenges experienced by the lack of regular contact with classroom teachers during the hybrid schedule and difficulties for those students lacking access to high-speed internet service.

Any school family that is uncomfortable with the increased number of students attending school as we transition to the full In-Person schedule, for any reason, will have the opportunity to opt-in to the Rigorous Remote learning model at any time.  The school district will continue all masking requirements, hand hygiene measures, and attempt to socially distance and stabilize student groupings as much as possible.  Any individual staff member or student that would be defined as a close contact (10 minutes or longer within 6 feet proximity) of a lab-confirmed COVID-19 case will continue to be subject to quarantine orders per the Leavenworth County Health Department.

Leavenworth USD 453 will be working diligently to mitigate the risk of transmission in classrooms and common spaces, and the school district will be prepared to recommend a transition back to the current Hybrid schedule, or All-Remote, if local conditions deteriorate and/or if adequate staffing cannot be provided to maintain a safe and secure learning environment due to health-related absences.  As more students transition back to the classroom, district leadership, building administrators, and certified and classified staff members will continuously identify opportunities to make necessary adjustments to accommodate as much in-person learning as can safely be provided.

Thank you in advance for your ongoing interest and support of Leavenworth students and staff during an unprecedented time in public education.
