Parents As Teachers

All children will learn, grow, and develop to realize their full potential.
To provide the information, support, and encouragement parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life.
Parents are their child's first and most influential teachers. Parents as Teachers is a child development program for parents of children under 36 months of age to assist in that role. It is sponsored by our local school district at no charge to families living within the community. Services include:
  • Personal visits
  • Group meetings
  • Playgroups
  • Screenings
  • Links with other community resources
Services are facilitated by certified parent educators with specialized training in working with families who have infants and toddlers. Program participation is voluntary. As funding is available, services may extend to kindergarten age. There are currently 250 families in the program. We are pleased to be recognized by Parents as Teachers National Center as a "Program of Excellence" following our assessment in program quality performance standards.
Leavenworth Parents as Teachers is an international affiliate of Parents as Teachers National Center, St. Louis, Mo. Our program also serves Fort Leavenworth USD207.

If you reside in Leavenworth (USD453) or Fort Leavenworth (USD207) School District and you are pregnant or have a child under 3 years of age, please contact us with your name, address, phone number, email, and child(ren) name and date of birth. You can send this information to kicia.wagner@usd453.org or call (913) 684-1450. Our regular office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the school year. Summer hours are limited.
Parents as Teachers playgroups provide a regular time for you to experience your child's development in a play format and also meet other families in the community with children of similar age. The playgroups use storybook themes. Although there is no charge for playgroups, it is required that you enroll for a specific session (based upon the age of your child). Playgroups begin for children as young as 2 months. Playgroups take place at Nettie Hartnett Education Center, 1000 3rd Avenue, Leavenworth, KS 66048. Call our office for an updated schedule.
Group Meetings
Parents as Teachers sponsors group meetings that are open to the community. These meetings are usually fun activities for parents and their young children to do together. Occasionally we will sponsor a special speaker and provide child care. These meetings are usually on Saturday mornings.
Examples of previous meetings include The Red Barn Farm, Dads and Donuts, Truck Jam, CPR refresher, and Blockfest.
This year we can expand our offering of group meetings to special populations. Each month, one of the churches in the community opens up their space for Parents as Teachers families to invite friends with young children to experience the program. These meetings are usually on the third Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Parenting Seminars, Classes, and Support Groups
Upon special request, Leavenworth Parents as Teachers provides special services. Call our office for qualifications and more information. Parenting classes are scheduled for six week sessions.
Parents as Teachers provides developmental screenings to children enrolled in our program upon special request. We screen in the areas of communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal social skills. We can provide a specific screening for social-emotional development. Through a grant from the Junior League of Wyandotte and Johnson Counties, we have the ability to provide functional hearing assessments on children using the otoacoustic emissions instrument. We are hopeful we will be able to provide a functional vision screening through a continuation of the the Junior League grant in the near future. The screenings are provided at no charge to the family.
