  • USD 453 is recruiting substitute teachers. The district will be recruiting throughout the school year. Substitutes are a vital part of our education team. When hired, substitute teachers become employees of the school district.

      Substitute Teacher Workday

      • Schools have various starting times. Substitutes must be in the building at least 25 minutes before and after the school day. 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. is an elementary full day. At the secondary level, a full day runs from 7:25 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. Both include a duty-free 30-minute lunch.
         
        How often you work depends on your willingness to work in classroom settings and school buildingsBeing flexible with the types of assignments and the number of schools could allow work during most days that school is in session.

      Pay Rates

      • The daily rate for a substitute teacher is $150.00 per day. A substitute teacher who does a long-term position (more than 10 days in the same position) moves to $175.00+ per day.

      Pay Schedule and Submission

      • Substitute teachers receive pay biweekly. Paychecks are direct deposited unless otherwise specified. Substitute teachers should verify all time and absence records on a weekly basis. Any corrections will need the supervisor’s approval. Substitutes should direct all questions about records to the Business Office. Substitutes should submit their hours online to the Payroll Office. This must happen no later than Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. following the end of the pay period.

      Substitute Credentials

      • Substitute teachers need to have a valid Kansas Teaching License, Kansas Standard Substitute License, or Kansas Emergency Substitute License issued by the Kansas State Department of Education Licensure Department. It is the substitute's responsibility to ensure that a current license is on file in our Human Resources Department.
