Two LHS Students Selected as 2010 KMBC-TV Hy-Vee Scholar Athletes

The Pioneer Ambassadors recently hosted a welcome breakfast in the library for students new to LHS.  The breakfast was just one of many activities the organization puts together to help new students through what can be an awkward, uncomfortable time for many – the transition into a new school.  The group is sponsored by counselor Jennifer Baptista.

Principal's Notes
Hello all,

The excitement and enthusiasm continue at LHS. Good things are happening across our campus, and I’d like you to join me in celebrating some of them as we head into the second quarter.

First of all, I am pleased and proud to announce that LHS has received the Standard of Excellence distinction from the Kansas Department of Education in the area of math. While most of the recent press has focused on the negatives of AYP (Annual Yearly Progress), this piece of news is glowingly positive. This honor represents hours upon hours of hard work on the part of students, teachers, and yes, sometimes even the parents who took the time to make sure their students did what it took to master their lessons. So to all of you who played a part in earning this well-deserved honor, “Job well done”!

The second cause for celebration I’d like to share with you is the incredible effort put forth by every member of the LHS faculty and staff to ensure every student learns and achieves academically. Our faculty, staff, and administrative team have put together an impressive array of positive supports and academic interventions to make sure each student has what he or she needs to succeed in the classroom as well as on state assessments. I am confident that when our testing window opens in the spring (and it will be here before you know it!), our students will be ready.

And, of course, the excitement continues as we prepare to welcome the first construction teams in just a few days now as the much-anticipated renovation project begins. Once again, I ask you to bear patiently the inconveniences that are a necessary part of any major construction project. I encourage you to focus on the end result, and not on the daily frustrations. Our students – your sons, daughters, and grandchildren – deserve the fine facility they will have at the end of the day. I also want to thank each and every one of our community supporters who made this much-needed facilities upgrade possible.

There is much work still to be done this year, but we at LHS have earned the right to celebrate some successes.

Today is a great day to be a Pioneer.

About Leavenworth High School

Leavenworth High School is a comprehensive and cosmopolitan high school. A diverse curriculum is offered with a high number of courses that reflect academic rigor, in core subjects and in fine arts, practical arts, physical education, and Junior ROTC.

School Organization

The school is accredited by the North Central Association of Secondary Schools. Leavenworth High School currently schedules a 180-day school year. It operates under block scheduling, in which students may enroll in courses that are either a semester or a year in length. Students earn one credit every semester for each class. Students are required to earn at least forty-six credits in order to graduate. A portion of the schedule is reserved for Academic Resource Time and a Seminar. Students may enroll in up to seven other courses. The school days are based on a schedule in which a student attends seven 48-minute classes each Monday through Wednesday and four 89-minute classes on Thursday and Friday.

Grade Point Average and Class Rank

Leavenworth High School has implemented a weighted grading system. Weighted grades are awarded for advanced placement courses on the following basis: A (5.0), B (4.0), C (3.0), D (1.0), F (0.0).
