Leavenworth Unified School District 453

Teacher of the Year Representatives Announced

Mrs. Johnston has been with the Leavenworth School District for seven years, working at David Brewer Elementary, and most recently at Henry Leavenworth Elementary.  In her application Mrs. Johnston talked about her focus on promoting kindness in her classroom and ensuring students respect themselves and one another. She said, "My goal as a teacher is to make every student feel like they are good enough, to feel like they matter, and that they have people who believe in them. By making my students feel like they are important to me, we can accomplish anything necessary together."

Mr. Bode has been with the Leavenworth School District for 11 years, all at Leavenworth High School.  In his application Mr. Bode said one of his greatest accomplishments as an educator comes from the relationships he has built with his students both in the classroom and outside the classroom. He said, "I dedicate a lot of my time to building that positive rapport because I do believe that it is essential for student success. Students work very hard for me and very hard with me because they trust me. I wholeheartedly believe that this trust is established because they see me investing my time into them."

Mrs. Johnston and Mr. Bode will represent our district in the regional portion of the 2018 Kansas Teacher of the Year recognition program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education. The Kansas Teacher of the Year Program identifies, recognizes, and celebrates representatives of excellent teaching in elementary and secondary classrooms throughout the state. The program’s mission is to build and utilize a network of exemplary teachers who are leaders in improvement of schools, student performance, and the teaching profession.

Please join us in congratulating the district’s building finalists: Rebecca Calhoun (Warren Middle School), Sara Davis (David Brewer Elementary), Ashley Nguyen (Anthony Elementary),  and Laura Walker (Earl M. Lawson Elementary). Each of these educators were selected to represent their building because of their exceptional skill, dedication, and inspiration.
