Teacher of the Year Representatives Announced

The district announced its representatives for the 2018 Kansas Teacher of the Year program during a surprise visit to their respective schools.

The Elementary Teacher of the Year is Caitlan Johnston, fifth grade teacher at Henry Leavenworth Elementary School. USD 453’s Secondary Teacher of the Year is Justin Bode, science teacher at Leavenworth High School.

The calendar for the 2017-2018 school year was approved by the Board of Education at their meeting on Wednesday, March 15.

Spring 2017 Parent-Teacher Conferences

Conferences for all schools will be held February 16, 2017 from 12:30—3:30 p.m. and 4:30—9:30 p.m. There will be no school for students February 15-20.

As a reminder, Spring Break for students begins Friday, March 17, and runs through March 26. Classes will resume on Monday, March 27, 2017.

NO SCHOOL - FRIDAY, JANUARY 13

Due to inclement weather forecast for Friday, January 13, there will be no school for students or staff. This includes 12 month employees. The Horizon Kids Before and After School program will also be closed.

Spring Break Schedule Revision

Spring Break for students will start one day earlier for students - with No School on Friday, March 17. This leads in to a week off from school, with students returning on Monday, March 27. This adjustment was necessary for the district to be in compliance with our negotiated agreement - and end of quarter work day requirements.

Nicholson and Reed Honored at KSDE Teacher of the Year Event

On Sunday, September 11, district finalists were recognized during a ceremony in Topeka for the KSDE Region 2 2017 Kansas Teacher of the Year award. This year, 103 educators across the state were nominated for the distinction honoring teaching excellence in elementary and secondary classrooms. USD 453’s elementary teacher of the year, Patty Nicholson – Henry Leavenworth, and secondary teacher of the year, Emily Reed – Richard Warren Middle School, were in attendance and joined by friends and family for the recognition luncheon.

Hometown Olympian Visits LHS

Olympic marathon runner, Amy (Hastings) Cragg, who finished ninth in the 2016 Rio Olympics paid a recent visit to Leavenworth High School, where she graduated from in 2002.
